Shame is a universal emotion. The therapeutic relationship is an environment essentially applicable to exploring shame. Gestalt therapy methods, which are present centered and relationally focused, offer a basis for clinical engagement that supports client’s movement towards integration and wholeness with this challenging emotion.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of this seminar participants will be able to:
- Summarize the development and expression of shame in family systems
- Apply Gestalt theory and practice to the diagnosis and treatment of internalized shame
- Practice Gestalt intervention techniques that can be applied with clinical populations in which shame is a primary concern.
